None of this makes the big ERP systems wrong. For some very large or highly specific requirements they remain the right call. But for most mid-market companies, the trade-offs increasingly favour Odoo.

Two shifts stand out. First, ERP is moving to the cloud, for lower infrastructure overhead and easier scaling. Second, the market is opening up: where ERP was once almost entirely proprietary, open-source platforms driven by active communities now compete at the top. Both trends play to Odoo's strengths, which is a large part of why it has been gaining ground.
